12th anniversary of MA Wazed’s death tomorrow

The 12th anniversary of the death of the husband of the renowned nuclear scientist and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, MA Wazed Miah, is celebrated on Sunday.

The internationally recognized nuclear scientist was born on February 16, 1942 to a respected Muslim family in the village of Laldighee Fatehpur in Pirganj upazila of the district.

He died on May 9, 2009.

He was laid to rest with full state honor in her family cemetery in his father’s village of Laldighee Fatehpur.

Due to the current global coronavirus pandemic, various organizations will observe the day with limited programs that adhere to health guidelines.

The main programs include the placing of wreaths at the tomb of Wazed on a limited scale, offering prayers seeking divine blessings for the departed soul, discussions, milad mahfils and the distribution of iftar items among orphans.

The Awami League of Pirganj upazila, which Dr. MA Wazed Foundation, Wazed’s family, Pirganj upazila administration and other organizations will celebrate the anniversary of the death on a limited basis in compliance with health guidelines.

Dr. Wazed Smriti Sangsad will place wreaths at the tomb of Wazed in the village of Laldighee Fatehpur and offer prayers for divine blessings for the eternal peace of his departed soul.

“We will arrange Milad Mahfils in the Keramotia Jam-e-Mosque and other mosques in Rangpur City in compliance with health guidelines,” said DWSS Secretary General Saiful Islam Jahangir.

Pirganj upazila’s nirbahi officer Biroda Rani Roy said the upazila government will place wreaths at Wazed’s tomb and arrange a discussion, followed by Milad Mahfil and the distribution of iftar items in Gopinathpur Hafizia Madrasha and the orphanage.

According to the family, Wazed was the youngest of four sons and three daughters of Abdul Quader Miah.

He studied up to the fourth grade in the elementary school of his home village and then up to the sixth grade at a high school in the town of Pirganj.

He passed the enrollment exams at Rangpur Zila School in 1956, received the First Division with Honors, and then enrolled at Rajshahi Government College, from where he passed the exams for higher secondary education.

Wazed Miah was inducted into the Department of Physics at Dhaka University in 1958 and earned a top spot on both BSc and MSc exams in 1961 and 1962.

He joined the then Pakistani Atomic Energy Commission on April 9, 1963 and received his diploma from the Imperial College of London from 1963-1964.

Wazed Miah returned home in September 1967 after completing a PhD in physics from Durham University in the UK and joined the Atomic Energy Research Center in Dhaka as a research fellow.

He later worked in postdoctoral research in London from November 1969 to 1970.

Wazed Miah married Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on November 17, 1967.

They have a son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and a daughter Saima Wazed Putul.

In 1969 Wazed received the associate ship of the Italy-based International Theoretical Physics Research Center of Nobel Prize winner Professor Salam, where he participated in a research project.

He returned home that same year to work with the Atomic Energy Research Center.

In 1975 he was in West Germany to complete a higher education in nuclear reactor science. Sheikh Hasina was also with him at that time.

From 1975 to 1982, Wazed carried out research in the laboratory of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission in New Delhi.

After returning home, the nuclear scientist, who has had a varied professional life, rejoined the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and retired as chairman in 1999.

In addition to his publications on scientific research and nuclear science, Wazed authored a number of books on social and political topics, including one on the memories of Sheikh Mujib.
