LA PAZ (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – July 15, 2021) The nuclear research facility built by Rosatom in Bolivia will start operations in a few months, Bolivian Foreign Minister Rogelio Mayta told Sputnik on Wednesday.

“The year of the coup [in Bolivia in 2019] caused delays [in the completion of the project] … But the project continues, “Mayta said, adding that” the center will be operational in a few months. “

A subsidiary of the Russian atomic energy company and the Bolivian Atomic Energy Agency signed a contract in 2017 to build a nuclear research and technology center in Bolivia’s El Alto.

The construction of the plant was put on hold because of the change of power in the Latin American country and later because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It should be the most alpine research center in the world. With a cyclotron accelerator and a multi-purpose irradiation center, the site will host research for agriculture and medicine.

The plant will operate a 200 kW pressurized water reactor. The project is valued at over $ 300 million and has an estimated functional capacity of 50 years. The reactor can then be modernized to extend its useful life.
