China has most nuclear power plants in progress: industry report

China has the most nuclear power plants under construction, according to an industry report released Wednesday by the China Nuclear Energy Association (NEA).

“China will build 17 new nuclear power plants by the end of 2020,” said Zhang Tingke, head of the association. “And the estimated output is 18.53 million kilowatts.”

During China’s 13th five-year plan from 2016 to 2020, the country built 20 new nuclear power plants with a total output of 23.44 million kilowatts, the report said.

Domestic technology is playing a bigger role in the industrial landscape as the Hualong-1 model enters mass production and the Guohe-1 model begins construction, the report also said.

“Our country has fully managed the core technology of nuclear power generation,” Zhang told China Media Group. “88 percent of Chinese third-generation nuclear technology is domestically developed.”

The electricity generated with nuclear technology increased by 5.02 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. 4.94 percent of all electricity generated in 2020 will come from nuclear power plants, the report said.
