Engineering is a lucrative profession in the Lynchburg area with an average salary of $ 96,700 per year, according to a study by the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance. Entry level engineering professionals make an average of $ 62,300, while more experienced professionals in the market can make $ 113,900. Most professionals in the field, 79.1%, have either a four-year college degree or a masters degree in an engineering-related subject.

Major engineering skill gaps within the Lynchburg MSA include manufacturing, modeling software, Autodesk Revit, and technical writing. Similarly, some certification qualifications, including Engineer in Training (EIT) and CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA), all have higher numbers of open positions than current candidates. In addition, industrial engineers with a high average annual salary of $ 101,100 have the largest career gap among the electrical, civil and mechanical engineering professions.

These factors back up the argument made last fall by Stephen Moret, President and CEO of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP), when he spoke with the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance about retooling various workers to adapt to areas where a labor shortage is a necessary talent. A recent economic analysis also shows that the withdrawal of baby boomers from the labor market is driving an estimated 3.5 million manufacturing openings in the United States, millions of which could go unfulfilled due to a lack of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
