Doosan Heavy Bags Deal Industrial Anti-Seismic Protection System for Nuclear Power Plant

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has been contracted by China Techenergy Company (CTEC) to supply an industrial seismic protection system (IAPS) for Units 7 and 8 of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant in Jiangsu Province.

At the beginning of the year, CTEC – a subsidiary of China General Nuclear – placed an order with the South Korean company for the IAPS systems for units 3 and 4 at the Xudabao plant in Liaoning province.

Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) is the core system that serves as the “brain and neural network” in nuclear power plants and offers integrated management solutions for operation, control, monitoring, instrumentation and emergency safety functions.

As a central component of the control technology, IAPS is used to automatically shut down the reactor if the earthquake sensor reaches or exceeds the set value during operation of the nuclear power plant.

Under a recently signed contract, Doosan will deliver the IAPS systems based on CTEC’s FirmSys digital I&C platform to Tianwan Units 7 and 8 by 2024.

In June 2018, Russia and China signed four agreements, including the construction of two VVER-1200 reactors as Units 7 and 8 of the Tianwan Power Plant, according to WNN.

In addition, two more VVER-1200 units are to be built at the new Xudabao (also known as Xudapu) site. All four units are scheduled to go into operation in 2027-2028.

Work on Tianwan 7 and 8 and Xudabao 3 and 4 began on May 19 this year at a ceremony attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin via video link.

During the ceremony, the first concrete for Tianwan 7 was poured. The first concrete for Xudabao 3 was poured on July 28th.

In March, CTEC awarded Doosan an order for the IAPS systems for units 3 and 4 of Xudabao, marking its first order for nuclear power control technology on the Chinese nuclear market. Under this contract, the company will develop, manufacture, test and install the systems through 2024.

In January 2018, Doosan – which supplied IAPS systems to all 28 South Korean power reactors – signed a letter of intent with CTEC to promote the collaboration that contributed to the award of these IAPS contracts.

“We have been able to build a trusting relationship with our customer using proven technology based on extensive experience and track record in the domestic nuclear market,” said Kiyong Na, CEO of Doosan Heavy’s Nuclear Business Group. “We will undertake to successfully carry out projects in blocks Xudapu 3 and 4 as well as Tianwan in blocks 7 and 8 with CTEC as general contractor and at the same time continue to pursue new opportunities to participate in the foreign nuclear power plant markets.”
