EDF delays final decision on Sizewell C

EDF is negotiating a financing agreement for Sizewell C with the government and will also need outside investors.

It is likely that legislation will be brought forward to allow developers to recover costs during construction from household energy bills.

However, the talks have been overshadowed in recent weeks by reports that ministers are looking for ways to block CGN from Sizewell and future UK nuclear projects. CGN has a 20 percent stake in Sizewell with the option to participate in the construction phase.

EDF submitted its application for a building permit to the Planning Inspectorate last May, delayed two months due to the pandemic, and made more than a dozen changes since then.

It has just tabled plans to build a temporary desalination facility adjacent to the site to provide fresh water to the facility during construction, which will include up to nine 40-foot shipping containers.

Northumbrian Water, which owns local water company Essex & Suffolk Water, has announced that a new main line will be needed to bring water from another catchment area, but it is unlikely to be ready before at least 2026.
