Egypt wants to build more nuclear power plants

An Egyptian official said Monday that the country plans to expand the construction of nuclear power plants to generate electricity to keep pace with the rapid development in the country.

The head of the nuclear fuel sector at NPPA Hesham Hegazy said Egypt intends to build several nuclear power plants in different regions. It already has the El Dabaa nuclear power plant.

The country aims to increase its dependency on nuclear energy to 8 percent by 2030, he said during a panel held by Rosatom entitled “The Role of Nuclear Energy in Sustainable Development”.

The Russian company is responsible for building the El Dabaa plant.

The discussion was attended by the CEO of the Rosatom Regional Center in the Middle East and North Africa Alexander Voronkov, Polina Lion, Vice President of the ASE Group, Dr. Gregory Sosnin, Vice President of ASE Group, and Yulia Chernyakhovskaya, Deputy Director for Nuclear Infrastructure, Alexander Voronkov, attended.

The El Dabaa nuclear power plant is one of the largest infrastructure projects supporting various economic sectors, Voronkov said.

The plant is an important engine for sustainable development and a source of manpower and comprehensive development across the country, he added.

Speaking of sustainable development, Lion said the project would meet at least six of the UN Sustainable Development Goals as the facility has a low carbon footprint and provides electricity at reasonable prices.

It also creates around 3,000 job opportunities and more than 10,000 indirect jobs, Lion estimates.

Sosnin said that the El Dabaa plant would have a positive impact on industrial development in Egypt and increase GDP.
