Egyptian President orders construction freeze in the safety zone of the El Dabaas nuclear power plant

CAIRO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – August 19, 2021) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi has ordered all construction work in the safety zone of the future El Dabaa nuclear power plant (NPP) to be frozen by the end of this year, Bassam Rady, the said a spokesman for the Egyptian President on Wednesday.

Sisi met with his Chancellor for Construction, Amir Ahmad, and the head of the Military College Ismail Kamal earlier this morning and studied the report of the higher committee on the safety criteria of the nuclear power plant.

“The president has ordered the Higher Committee to suspend all construction in the areas in that zone by the end of this year,” said Rady.

The Egyptian leader also ordered a thorough analysis of the urbanization prospects near the facility according to global criteria, the spokesman said.

Kamal told Sisi that the nuclear power plant and its safety zone meet the most advanced safety standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rady added.

In 2015, Moscow and Cairo signed agreements to build the El Dabaa nuclear power plant in northern Egypt and a US $ 25 billion Russian loan for this purpose. In July, the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plant Authority (NPPA) announced that it had received all the necessary documents from the National Nuclear and Radiological Inspectorate to enable Russian state-owned nuclear company Rosatom to start building the first two power plant reactors.

In August, the Egyptian government announced that the NPPA was completing the construction of infrastructure and houses for workers and strengthening the coast near the factory premises.
