Erdogan: Turkey’s first nuclear power plant will be ready in 2023

Turkey expects its first nuclear power plant at the Akkuyu power plant to be ready in May 2023, said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday during a visit to the city of Mersin, where the country’s first nuclear reactor is being built.

Erdogan said 3,000 Russian engineers and 10,000 Turkish engineers were involved in the construction of the facility, emphasizing the importance of completing the construction in 2023, the centenary of the founding of the Turkish Republic.

A contract with Russia to build the Turkish nuclear power plant was signed in 2010. The reactor is to be operated by the Akkuyu Nukleer company, 99% of which is owned by the Russian nuclear plant company Rosarom.

The reactor will consist of four blocks, each with an output of 1,200 megawatts of electricity.

Turkey plans to build another nuclear power plant in the Sinop city area.
