Households must expect higher bills for a new nuclear power plant | Companies

Ministers are due to adopt a new nuclear funding model this fall as EDF pushes the green light for a proposed £ 20 billion facility in Suffolk.

The government has been in formal negotiations with the French energy giant since December to fund the Sizewell C project, which would be a sister station to the Hinkley Point C plant under construction in Somerset.

Sizewell C would have a capacity of 3.2 gigawatts and could generate enough electricity to meet 7 percent of the UK’s electricity needs.

The government has announced that it will introduce a “regulated system-based” financing model for the project, which would result in consumers starting to pay for the system through their energy bills while it is still running
