Hyundai Engineering, the plant engineering and construction unit of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group, with Ultra Safe Nuclear Corp. (USNC), will supply parts for fourth-generation micro-modular reactors (MMRs) project in Ontario, Canada, riding on active global engagement of mini nuclear grids for carbon commitment and energy security.

The company and Seattle-based partner will provide power generation facilities, cooling systems, and radioactive equipment for the MMR project after the two in June signed a detailed design contract for the Chalk River Laboratories, a Canadian nuclear research facility in Deep River.

Through the supply contract at this time, Hyundai would be making strides in micro nuclear module projects. The Chalk River project is most close to the commercialization of MMRs, dubbed to be the most reliable nuclear reactor of smaller scale.

The two firms aim to complete the MMR construction and start operating by 2026.

Earlier in January, the engineering firm sealed a deal with USNC to buy its stake worth $30 million to secure exclusive rights to USNC’s MMR engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) business. It has recently gained approval for its equity investment from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Hyundai also signed a technology partnership with USNC to develop multi-purpose modular reactors last Wednesday. “After a decade-long partnership with USNC, our joint project to build MMRs has come to fruition. We put all our resources to get ahead in MMR technologies for carbon neutrality,” said an official from Hyundai Engineering.
