India begins construction of the Kudankulam Block 6 nuclear power plant

On December 20, 2021, the main construction phase of Kudankulam Block 6 was officially initiated with the first concreting in the foundation slab of the reactor building.

“The first two NPP power plants demonstrate sustainable operation at nominal output level. The second stage gensets will be built in Block 3 in preparation for the reactor pressure vessel installation, ”said Andrey Lebedev, ASE JSC Vice President for Projects in India and Future Projects.

He added: “In June of this year, the first concrete was laid at power plant No. 5 and on December 20, the first concreting started at power plant No. 6 To ensure business in the Tamil Nadu region and the Republic of India as a whole; In addition, it will increase confidence in the prospects of our friendly countries to develop peaceful nuclear cooperation using the most advanced projects of Russian-style high-performance nuclear power plants. “

The equipment required for the priority installation in blocks 5 and 6 is now being delivered and the construction process is supported by the working documentation.

After signing the general framework agreement (BGF) for the construction of power plants 3 and 4, built on 10 in the same design as the units of the second stage. On June 1, 2017, the credit protocol for the Intergovernmental Agreement of December 5, 2008 and the BGF for units 5 and 6 of the Kudankulam NPP were signed as a single batch of documents.

It has a wide range of assets, including assets related to the design, construction and operation of nuclear power plants, uranium mining, conversion and enrichment, nuclear fuel supply, decommissioning, storage and transportation of spent fuel, and safe disposal of nuclear waste. Rosatom is also engaged in manufacturing equipment and isotope products for the needs of nuclear medicine, scientific research and materials science, manufacturing digital and various nuclear and non-nuclear innovative products. The company’s strategy is to develop low-carbon power generation projects, including in the wind power sector. Today the company unites over 300 companies and organizations and over 250,000 employees.

The power plants No. 3,4 and 5,6 are the second and third stages of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant, which was built according to the AES-92 design with the reactor type VVER-1000 (V-412). The technical solutions implemented in the Kudankulam design mark the further evolutionary development of high-powered VVER reactor NPPs and the transition to the creation of a new, reliable, safe and workable power plant.

New power plants at the Kudankulam NPP meet the latest IAEA safety requirements.

The developer – the technical customer of the plant – is the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. The general planner and supplier of the equipment is JSC ASE.

Currently, the power plants No. 1 and 2 of the Kudandulam NPP are operated with the capacity specified in the operating plan.
