Iran rejects EU proposal to extend the “breakout time”

European officials offered a new three-pronged approach to Iran that included extending its “breakout period” but Tehran has refused, the Wall Street Journal said in a report.

The eruption time refers to the time it takes to enrich uranium for an atomic bomb.

“In addition to storing and sealing advanced centrifuges, they (European officials) want to rip out Iran, the electronic infrastructure it currently uses to operate machines banned under the agreement, and Iran’s capacity to manufacture new centrifuges reduce in its assembly plants. “Said the newspaper.

The newspaper did not say whether the Iranian side’s European offer was made during the Vienna talks.

Iran began producing state-of-the-art uranium silicide fuel for its Tehran research reactor earlier this month amid mounting tensions with the United States fueled by the deadlock on the 2015 nuclear deal.

The country’s envoy to the United Nations Nuclear Agency, Kazem Gharibabadi, said the agency had been “informed” of Iran’s move to produce high-quality radiopharmaceuticals, in his opinion.

It immediately drew criticism from the US and three European powers who held marathon talks with Iran in Vienna to save the nuclear deal that Washington abandoned in May 2018.

They warned against complicating or even torpedoing the ongoing talks, which were practically put on hold after six three-month rounds.

While the UK, France and Germany expressed “great concern” about the measure, the US described it as an “unfortunate step backwards” but stressed that the diplomatic window remains open.

The Wall Street Journal said Western diplomats believe Iran is using the slow pace of talks to “acquire irreversible technical knowledge about uranium metal, centrifuges and the production of higher quality enriched uranium.

“In June US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that if not stopped, Iran’s breakthrough time could be in a few weeks.”

It remains unclear whether Iran is ready and willing to do what it has to do in order to comply with the regulations again, ”said Blinken.

“In the meantime, his program gallops forward. … The longer this takes, the more the breakout time shortens … According to public reports, it has now dropped to a few months at best. And if this continues, it will” come down for a couple of weeks. “
