Kazakhstan plans construction of nuke plant with 2 power reactors

AKIPRESS.COM – Kazakhstan needs to build 17.5 GW of electricity generation facilities by 2035, Vice Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Jandos Nurmaganbetov said at Central Asia Clean Energy Forum in Almaty.

The Ministry of Energy plans construction of nuclear power plant at least with two reactor units, he said. The capacity of the nuke plant will make 2.4GW.

Kazakhstan also plans to increase electricity generation with use of coal by 1.4GW.

“A significant placein electricity generation is held by gas-fired power plants with overall capacity of around 5GW. We plan to build hydropower plants with the total capacity of around 2GW. Such mixture of electricity generation facilities should reduce the share of coal-burning generation from 70% to almost 40% by 2035,” Vice Minister Nurmaganbetov stated.

The share of gas and renewable energy sources will make around 40% and nuclear power – 12% by 2035, the Vice Minister said.

Kazakhstan plans to build a nuke plant in Ulken village near the Balkhash lake, around 255 km away from Bishkek.
