L&T Construction bags major EPC order for Saudi Arabia’s 1.5GW solar PV plant – NEWS, POWER

The renewable energy division of Larsen & Toubro’s power transmission and distribution business has signed a turnkey EPC contract for the 1.5 GW solar PV project Sudair in Saudi Arabia.

The EPC contract was signed by the consortium of ACWA Power and Water and Electricity Holding Company, a subsidiary of the Public Investments Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF).

This project is considered to be the largest solar power plant in Saudi Arabia with a PPA signature. It is also one of the largest such plants in the world.

A 30.8 square kilometer plot of land is available for the upcoming project in the province of Riyadh, on which a total capacity of 1.5 GW PV solar modules with associated single-axis trackers and inverters can be installed.

The ambitions of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) in Saudi Arabia are on track. As part of the NREP, the Sudair Solar PV project is awarded to PIF and its partner ACWA Power.

This project is part of the 70% of the Kingdom’s 58.7 GW target capacity allocated to the Public Investment Fund (PIF), while the Renewable Energy Project Development Bureau (REPDO) would be tendering the remaining 30% as proposed by the EU announced Department of Energy in 2019.

“With multiple GW Solar EPC experience, L&T has grown into a global technology player for solar systems,” said SN Subrahmanyan, CEO and Managing Director of Larsen & Toubro.

“L&T has been a provider of EPC services for several green projects over the past few years. We are India’s largest EPC hydropower construction company, the largest player in the market for the construction of nuclear power plants with a total capacity of 9360 MWe, including some ongoing projects, on a turnkey EPC basis with the ability to manufacture important critical components such as steam turbines, generators , End shields, and other critical equipment. ”

Subrahmanyan found that L&T has the largest market share in flue gas desulphurisation systems for fossil fuel power plants.

L&T has commissioned over 2.1 GW of utility-scale solar projects, and operates and maintains several of them.

“We have a diversified renewable energy portfolio with 32 MW floating solar power plants, 135 MWH battery energy storage projects, 500 microgrids and 14,000 solar water pumps,” said Subrahmanyan.

L&T is also working on possible solutions related to technologies for capturing and storing green hydrogen and carbon.

“Securing this project is an important milestone on our path to clean and green energy to tackle the climate crisis the world is facing,” added Subrahmanyan.

Mr. T. Madhava Das, Full Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) commented: “KSA aims to be a pioneer in renewable energy and we are excited to be part of this journey. We have been building efficient electricity transmission and distribution networks with modern substations and transmission lines in this region for more than two decades. This is yet another recognition of our ability to deliver mega-projects quickly and to scale. ”

Larsen & Toubro is an Indian multinational company engaged in EPC projects, hi-tech manufacturing and services, with sales of over $ 21 billion. It operates in over 30 countries around the world.
