Smith celebrated the performance in a tweet, saying:

“I’m very honored to be the first black woman to make history to complete a #PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Florida on #Jamaica’s Independence Anniversary Day,” she said.

First degree

Smith received a scholarship for her PhD from Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland, which she graduated with degrees in chemistry and mathematics in 2017, the Jamaica Observer said.

She received the National Science Foundation’s coveted Graduate Research Fellowship in 2018 to study at the University of Florida’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and has never looked back.

In the service of their nation

After completing her doctorate, she turned her gaze to her homeland, more precisely to Slowpoke, the only nuclear research reactor in the Caribbean based at the International Center for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS), which is primarily responsible for training and not for training serves energy-related applications.
