MGX Minerals Announces Advances In Accident Tolerant Nuclear Fuel Review

VANCOUVER – TheNewswire – November 26, 2021 – MGX Minerals Inc. (“MGX” or the “Company”) (CSE: XMG) (CNSX: XMG.CN) (FKT: 1MG) (OTC: MGXMF) Announces Rapid Review of Accident Tolerant Nuclear Fuel Technology (“ATF”). The company is working on the further development of ATF fuel for existing nuclear reactors of the pebble bed type and future small modular nuclear reactors (“SMR”). including TRi-structural fuel with isotropic particles (“TRISO”).

TECHNICAL ADVANTAGES OF THE INNOVATIVE ATF

Technological advantages relate to improving the fuel microstructure. A larger grain size slows down the release of the fission product, increases the swelling of the fuel and facilitates heat transfer:

  1. A.A larger grain size in ATF is advantageous for the malleability of the fuel and the reduction of cracking (fuel softening). A larger grain size in ATF reduces fuel porosity and increases thermal conductivity and heat dissipation;

  2. B.There is already a reduced level of oxidation (by approx. 2 – 3 times at a temperature of 400C). This is important for the safety of the reactor operation. Oxidation of fuel drastically changes thermal conductivity and increases fuel temperature, which can lead to fuel melt.

  3. C.Decreasing the rate of oxidation of ATF reduces the embrittlement of the fuel and reduces the cracking of the fuel and the release of fission gas.

  4. D.When the corrosion of the fuel is slowed down; less fuel is washed away. The burn-up is expected to be higher. This contributes to an improved economy of the fuel cycle.

  5. E.A lower temperature gradient in fuel pellets can reduce internal stresses and the likelihood of cracking.

The company is now focused on using a proprietary fuel design in enhancing the safety and supplying the approximately 500 ball bed reactors currently in use worldwide, including the CANDU reactor. In addition, approximately 100 new Small Modular Reactor (“SMR”) technologies are currently in the research and development and commercialization phases. The purpose of providing a fuel with significantly increased thermal stability increases reliability due to reduced excessive build-up of central heat and reduced corrosion.
