NRC Radio Broadcast 2 NRC Safety Review

This is the second of three NRC broadcasts of a proposal to dig up mine waste from the site of the former Northeast Church Rock Mine and dispose of that waste for permanent disposal in a repository on an existing uranium mill at the nearby United Nuclear Mill site? ˅. This broadcast describes the technical review of the NRC staff to determine whether the United Nuclear Corporation proposal can be safely implemented. This safety review differs from our environmental review in that it focuses on the specifics of the proposal to determine whether it would meet NRC requirements to protect public health, safety and the environment. The results of the NRC’s safety review are described in a report called a safety assessment report.
