In partnership with the University of Idaho, second installation to offer hands-on learning opportunities related to nuclear science and engineering
PORTLAND, Oregon – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Today NuScale Power announced the opening of the second of three planned NuScale Energy Exploration (E2) centers in partnership with the University of Idaho at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES.) Based in Idaho Falls, ID. CAES ‘E2 Center, known as the SMR Simulator Laboratory, will support research by CAES entities: Idaho National Laboratory, Boise State University, Idaho State University and University of Idaho, and allow users to take control Room operators to learn more about the innovative features and functions that are unique to NuScale’s SMR technology.
The CAES SMR Simulator Laboratory uses NuScale’s E2 Center simulation technology and provides users with an exciting practical learning opportunity to apply nuclear science and engineering principles through simulated real-world nuclear power plant operating scenarios. The SMR simulator laboratory uses state-of-the-art computer modeling in a simulator of the power plant’s NuScale Small Modular Reactor (SMR) control room, allowing users to act as the “control room operator” on a NuScale 12 SMR facility to learn more about the breakthrough features and capabilities Learn the features of NuScale’s SMR technology. In addition, it will provide an opportunity to reach the community through demonstrations, tours, and training for community leaders, K-12 students, and interested citizens.
These E2 centers are backed by a 2019 Department of Energy grant to expand understanding of advanced nuclear technology in a control room environment and to provide students, researchers, operators, and members of the public with an opportunity to immerse themselves in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research and education. Through this scholarship, the University of Idaho has chosen to locate its E2 center at CAES and is the second of three planned NuScale E2 center installations that will serve US universities.
