Russian and Chinese heads of state and government officially start building new nuclear reactors in China – Business & Economy

MOSCOW, May 19th. / TASS /. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend a video conference on Wednesday to start construction of new reactors of Russian design at the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and the Xudapu NPP in China.

The two heads of state and government are expected to officially initiate the first concreting of Unit 7 of the Tianwan NPP and Unit 3 of the Xudapu NPP.

The Tianwan NPP is the largest object of Sino-Russian economic cooperation. The first and the second unit were put into operation in 2007. The third and fourth units were put into operation in 2018.

On March 7, 2019, the framework contract for the construction of power plants 7 and 8 of the Tianwan NPP was signed in Beijing. The contract stipulates that the Russian side will design the power plant’s nuclear island and supply the key equipment for both units.

In March of this year, Rosatom Alexei Likhachev, director general of the Russian state nuclear power company Rosatom, said in an interview with Rossiya-24 that “the first concrete in Unit 7 of the Tianwan NPP” is planned for May. He also said that construction of Unit 8 of Tianwan NPP and Unit 4 of Xudapu NP will begin in 2022.
