The South Korean science ministry said Thursday that the country’s nuclear research institute has won a $ 3.88 million contract to export nuclear reactor technology to Bangladesh.

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has signed a contract with the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission to supply digital measurement and control systems for the research nuclear reactor of the South Asian country by January 2023, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The South Korean Nuclear Institute will provide and install the digital systems responsible for monitoring and controlling the nuclear reactor and safely disrupting operations in the event of problems.

The 3 megawatt training and research reactor in Bangladesh, commissioned in 1986, is currently being modified to bring its outdated analog systems up to date.

The latest deal marks the sixth export of research-based nuclear technology to South Korea since it won a contract to build a research nuclear reactor in Jordan in 2009. (Yonhap)
