T1 Celebrating 50 Years of the Resident Inspector Program
The Atomic Energy Commission piloted the first resident inspector at a nuclear facility in 1974. Fifty years later, the program is still a critical part of the mission of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to protect public health and safety. With a panel of former and current NRC leaders and resident inspectors, as well as external stakeholders, we will explore the history of the program and how it has become ingrained into the NRC’s culture. Then we will explore how the program may continue to grow in the future.

Learning Objectives:
Understand the history of the program.
Understand the original intent of the program.
Understand the current purpose of the program.
Discuss the considerations for stationing a resident inspector at a site.
Discuss resident inspectors in the future.
Takeways:
The Resident Inspector program is an important part of the NRC’s history.
Resident inspectors will continue to be a critical part of the NRC’s mission.
