The SRNS mini scholarship program now also includes Orangeburg teachers |

AIKEN – Thirty-four high school students from Allendale, Bamberg, and Orangeburg received $ 25,000 in mini-scholarships for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS).

The funds will benefit more than 4,000 students attending schools near the Savannah River Site.

This new outreach initiative from SRNS continues to develop its employment pipeline by making teaching materials and equipment available to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) educators.

Sean Alford, executive vice president and chief of administration of SRNS, noted that SRNS has provided mini-scholarships to elementary and middle school teachers across the region for decades. “In fact, more than $ 700,000 has been raised through this treasured program to date,” he said.

“As a company, we value a diverse workforce and representatives from all districts around SRS. With the approval of recent missions, such as the Plutonium Processing Facility in Savannah River, we believe that SRNS can help create a viable workforce by promoting student achievement in areas near the site, “said Alford.

The grants allow teachers to purchase equipment, computer programs, hands-on kits, and other products to enhance their students’ performance and STEM learning experience.

“On behalf of the Building Construction Class of the Orangeburg Career and Technology Center, I and my students would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for receiving a Mini-Scholarship from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions,” said Tracey Scoville, Certified National Center for Lecturer in Construction and – research (NCCER). “This scholarship allows me to purchase personal protective equipment and tools that are used to create a customized tool box for each student that eliminates the risk of contamination and ensures the safety of all students and teachers. These tools are used to design various projects that will develop their skills as they pursue their NCCER certification. “

Shawn Foster, Superintendent of Orangeburg County School District, thanked SRNS for expanding the mini-scholarship program to Orangeburg County public schools.

“Orangeburg teachers responded with tremendous enthusiasm for the opportunity, and I couldn’t be more excited to see how the $ 19,250 SRNS grant to our teachers will affect special projects in classrooms, grade levels, and all of our schools. “

SRNS Education Outreach programs use unique SRS resources to significantly increase interest in STEM while supporting improvements in education. The SRNS management team believes that business, industry, government and the academic community should work together to improve opportunities for all local students.
