The toxic compound arsenic is found in over 6,000 human settlements in India

There are 6,061 arsenic-affected and 4,592 fluoride-affected human settlements in the country, the government told parliament on Thursday. In a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said of the 6,061 homes affected by arsenic, more than half or 3,115 are in West Bengal, followed by 2,291 in Assam, 385 in Bihar and 222 in Uttar Pradesh.

Of the 4,592 settlements affected by fluoride, 2,820 are in Rajasthan, followed by 844 in Bihar and 276 in West Bengal. Shekhawat said that since August 2019, the center has been working with the states to implement the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) to provide drinking water to every rural household in the country by 2024 which also include residential buildings affected by arsenic and fluoride pollution.

“Accordingly, the states are giving priority to water supply plans to supply such settlements with drinking water,” said Shekhawat.

In a separate statement, Jal Shakti’s ministry said that around 2,000 laboratories across the country have been opened to the public to test their water samples at a nominal price.

The source coordinates of all water samples are recorded and the water quality test reports are created online and sent to citizens along with a copy to the responsible health engineer for immediate corrective action, if any, and also to the central database for continuous monitoring and corrective action, it said.

Last week the ministry launched a framework and guidelines for testing, monitoring and monitoring drinking water quality as well as a water quality information management system (WQIMS), an online portal that provides detailed information from laboratories for this purpose.

The guidelines specify the work to be done in terms of surveillance and surveillance at the state, district, block, or tehsil and village level.

The basic water quality parameters prescribed in the guidelines are pH, total dissolved solids, turbidity, chloride, total alkalinity, total hardness, sulfate, iron, total arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, total coliform bacteria, E.coil or thermotolerant coliform bacteria.
