Tokamak Energy signals major expansion with over 160 new jobs as a pioneer in commercial fusion energy

OXFORD, England, July 16, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Tokamak Energy today announced that it will double its workforce and facility in the UK as part of a major expansion initiative that will provide a significant boost to UK merger development and commercialization.

More than 160 high-quality new positions for scientists and engineers are being created at the company’s headquarters in Milton Park Science Center, near by Oxford, over the next three years.

MP Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) visited the company’s headquarters today to acknowledge this significant expansion and to see firsthand the progress that has already been made.

This year the company plans with its spherical tokamak ST-40 to be the first company in the world to reach a temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius in a stable plasma, an essential cornerstone for economic fusion energy. The UK government has already backed UK efforts to facilitate the merger through the ongoing STEP program and has provided Tokamak Energy with £ 10 million as part of its Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) program.

This recruiting offensive comes from the fact that the company continues to lead the way in commercial fusion energy, which is clean, economical and can be used worldwide. Tokamak Energy is developing two technologies that are critical to commercial fusion energy – high temperature superconductor (HTS) magnets and compact spherical tokamaks.

Tokamak Energy is developing significant additional space at its Milton Park headquarters to accelerate its technology and commercial plans. This will enable further milestones with the ST-40 in the future.

Chris Kelsall, CEO of Tokamak Energy, said, “We have the most advanced spherical tokamak in the world and we are the world leader in HTS magnets. We already bring the world’s leading scientific, technical, industrial and commercial skills under one roof. This expansion underpins our vision to be the pioneer of commercial fusion energy that is clean, economical and usable worldwide. We will continue to attract the best talent here in the UK and around the world as we build the fusion powerhouse of tomorrow while commercializing the technology we have already developed. “

Economic and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said, “We need breakthrough companies like Tokamak Energy to harness the power of merger and demonstrate its remarkable potential as a potentially limitless, clean and safe energy source for the future.

“It was fantastic to visit Tokamak Energy today to see firsthand how they are doubling down on their merger commercialization efforts, expanding their site and creating 160 new high-quality jobs – a massive boost to our plans to support the fast growing merger Supply chain across the UK and cement our position as a global science superpower. “

The UK is a global center for the development of fusion, a new source of limitless clean, carbon-free, safe and secure energy that will be essential for deep decarbonization well before 2050.

The plans announced today by Tokamak Energy are also designed to benefit the fast growing UK fusion supply chain, where over 200 companies already supply materials and technology.

About Tokamak Energy

Tokamak Energy is a leading global commercial fusion energy company based near, Oxford, Great Britain. The company develops the fusion power plant of tomorrow and at the same time markets the technical applications of today.

Tokamak Energy is pursuing the merger through the combined development of spherical tokamaks together with high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets.

With the ST-40 fusion prototype, Tokamak Energy has developed the most advanced compact spherical tokamak in the world – a key factor for commercial fusion. The operation of the ST-40 is planned 100m Grad Plasma in 2021 which will be a major milestone in the commercial merger and the first privately funded fusion module to reach that milestone worldwide.

Tokamak Energy received five US Department of Energy grants in 2020, creating partnerships with leading-edge expertise in the US National Laboratory System. The company is working with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory to develop the ST-40. As part of the investment under the Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) program, it has also received a £ 10 million grant from the UK government.

Tokamak Energy is working with CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, on High Temperature Superconductor Magnets (HTS) to develop proprietary technology that scales to the large magnets required for fusion power modules. HTS magnets are also used in particle accelerators, in aerospace, and in several other industries.

Founded in 2009 as a spin-off from the Culham Center for Fusion Energy, the company currently employs a growing team of over 160 people with talent from the UK and experts from around the world. It brings together world-leading scientific, engineering, industrial and commercial skills. The company has more than 50 families of patent applications and has raised over £ 100 million in private investments.

Once fusion energy has been realized, it will be clean, economical and usable globally – an important prerequisite for achieving international climate policy goals.
