Upton Praises $ 6 Million Grant For Cassopolis Industrial Park

A $ 6 million grant has been announced for Midwest Energy and Communications Southwest Michigan Advanced Research and Technology Park in Cassopolis. The grant will be used to build the road, canal and water infrastructure needed for the 234 hectare industrial park. Congressman Fred Upton helped secure the grant from the US Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Agency. He spoke to WSJM News about the park.

“The Economic Development Administration worked with us and the governor’s office, and I worked with a few ear tags to try to help them too,” said Upton. “It’s a real job creation, and it will happen within the next two or three years, provided everything is done right. Really exciting news for Cass County. “

Upton says the Cassopolis industrial park will create hundreds of jobs for the region.

“You are going to see a number of companies attracted and likely to come to this part of the state, and the CBA grant is just a real sweetener to make sure this happens.”

The project is funded under the EDA’s Support to Nuclear Decommissioning Communities program, which aims to mitigate the effects of sudden job losses due to nuclear decommissioning. Upton says as the closure of the Palisades plant approaches, the new industrial park will help the area absorb the job losses.
