Readers Respond to Oregonians Hesitant to Get the COVID-19 Vaccine

A study from the University of Oregon shows that 25% of women and 21% of men in Oregon say they will not get the COVID-19 vaccine. That would mean too few Oregonians are getting the vaccine to control the pandemic – Dr. Anthony Fauci recently estimated that 85% of Americans need to be vaccinated to prevent it from spreading rapidly. In last week’s cover story, WW listed four key demographics with a high rate of vaccine opposition, including anti-mask Republicans and liberals who love natural oils and are naturopaths. Here’s what our readers had to say:

Mr. Logic via wweek.com: “It’s not surprising from the city that is afraid of fluoride. Science is not spoken here.”

@marziah via Twitter: “Lots of left-wing science deniers too. Their homeopath told them vaccines are full of toxins and they should do a liver detox instead or whatever is fashionable now.”

@ItsAPandemic via Twitter: “As someone who loves natural oils and sends their kid to a Waldorf school, I can’t fucking wait for the vaccine.”

@ RavynStadick via Twitter: “Waldorf-visiting, vaccine-celebrating family here.”

Herb Kateley via Facebook: “Doesn’t really matter yet. Most people can’t get the vaccine because of the classification of people, supplies, and logistics. I think we need to focus on getting enough vaccines and then worrying about the naysayers.”

Richard Broussard on Facebook: “They can stay at home and keep their children out of their Montessori schools until they do.”

Lucille Beever on Facebook: “I think that vaccine requirements in schools, workplaces, travel and healthcare are always driven by the consumer. … Lots of people will be moving their business to places where COVID scans are required.”

Nobody special about wweek.com: “True herd immunity requires vaccinating the whole world. It’s not going to happen soon and it can take decades. Also, Fauci is constantly changing the herd immunity target posts. I think he said 60% at once, now it’s 85%. Or something The bottom line is: get anyone who wants to vaccinate as soon as possible and forget about the rest. Once the elderly are vaccinated, the death rate becomes very, very low, even without being particularly close to ‘herd immunity’ . “

SJE via wweek.com: “For those who argue that the long-term effects of the vaccine are unknown, so are the long-term effects of COVID-19 infection. Let’s not even dwell on the real possibility that COVID-19 infection is pre-existing.” Condition for the insurance industry, health, life and disability to exclude these people from insurance cover in the future. “

Steve Tait via Facebook: “You choose: safe, effective life-saving vaccine or ventilator and coffin.”
