As with many people during this pandemic, flat screens have become my windows on the world. Fortunately, I’m a gamer too, and that gives me access to experiences that aren’t tied to physical locations – including virtual forays into Colorado. It may sound cheesy, but titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Wasteland 3, Forza Horizon and Red Dead Redemption helped scratch this Denverite’s itch for fresh air out of town.

Horizon: Zero Dawn, which is getting a sequel to PlayStation 5 (Horizon: Forbidden West, due later this year) was one of the best of the PS4 generation. There are also Red Rocks, various scenic highland stops and other landmarks of the Front Range.

There is also the Road Warrior experience from Forza or Need for Speed: The Run, the Virtual Broncos seasons from Madden NFL and the virtual snow sports of classic series like SSX, Amped, Steep. The latter often feature Colorado runs, and some are made playable again through streaming services like PlayStation Now and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
